Legendary Ibiza Clubs: Ku, Space, Privilege and Where They Are Now

· Updated:

Most of Ibiza's legendary clubs haven't disappeared; they've changed names. Ku (1979–1995) became Privilege, which closed after 2019 and is now [UNVRS]. Space (1986–2016) is now Hï. Bora Bora's role on Playa d'en Bossa has passed to Playa Soleil, and Sankeys became Octan, whose current status is unclear. Meanwhile Pacha (1973) and Amnesia (1976) are still open, which makes them the oldest of today's big clubs. Here is the timeline, with what stands on each site now.

Ku → Privilege → [UNVRS]

The San Rafael site is the most famous story on the island. It was sold in 1979 and renamed Ku, an open-air club around a swimming pool that defined 1980s Ibiza; Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé filmed the "Barcelona" video there in 1987. New rules in the early 1990s forced clubs to cover their dancefloors, and in 1995 it became Privilege, home of Manumission and, in the 2003 Guinness World Records, the world's largest nightclub. Privilege closed after 2019, never reopened after the pandemic, and the site came back on 30 May 2025 as [UNVRS], voted DJ Mag's number one club in 2026. Our Privilege post has the long version.

Space → Hï

Space opened in Playa d'en Bossa in the summer of 1986 and took its best-known form from 1989 under Pepe Roselló. Its open-air Terrace, with planes landing low overhead, became part of Ibiza folklore; We Love Sundays started in 1999, and Carl Cox's Music is Revolution ran for close to 15 years until his nine-hour final set in September 2016. DJ Mag readers voted Space the world's best club several times, including 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016. It closed in 2016, and the site reopened on 28 May 2017 as Hï Ibiza, which went on to win the same poll four years running, from 2022 to 2025. If a guide still recommends Space, it was written before 2017.

The survivors: Pacha, Amnesia and Es Paradis

Pacha opened in 1973 in an old farmhouse on the edge of Ibiza Town and is still there, cherries and all. Amnesia opened in 1976 on a finca whose lease was held by the philosopher Antonio Escohotado, who first called it El taller del olvido, "the workshop of forgetting"; the Greek name Amnesia came soon after. Through the 1990s it became one of the island's dance music landmarks, and 2026 was its 50th-anniversary season. In San Antonio, Es Paradis, under its glass pyramid, is described by Ibiza Spotlight as one of the oldest clubs on the island and still floods its dancefloor for the Fiesta del Agua.

DC10, Bora Bora, Sankeys and Gatecrasher

DC10 opened in 1999 as a roofless shed at the end of the airport runway, and Circoloco, born on its terrace that same year, turned it into the island's underground reference; 2026 was Circoloco's 27th season. Bora Bora was the old beach bar of Playa d'en Bossa, and Ibiza Spotlight now calls Playa Soleil its modern successor. Sankeys, also in Playa d'en Bossa, became Octan, but we found no 2026 activity and one listing calls it temporarily closed, so don't plan around it. And Eden in San Antonio ran as Gatecrasher in 2014 before going back to its name; in 2024 it even hosted the Space brand on Fridays, renamed NOSPACE after a legal dispute.

Legends you can still visit

  • Pikes, outside San Antonio: its small club room, Freddie's, was once Freddie Mercury's suite, and the pool is the one from Wham!'s Club Tropicana video. Free guest list, over-27s only.
  • Café Mambo, on San Antonio's Sunset Strip since 1994: free entry and DJs at sunset.
  • Amnesia's Terrace at sunrise, Pacha on a Sunday, Circoloco on a Monday: the nights that built the reputation are still running in summer.
